Until recently an AI assistant could describe a product but not buy it. That line is being erased. Agentic commerce is the name for shopping where an assistant compares options and completes the purchase for the customer. Two open standards now exist to make it work, and both arrived in the first half of 2026.
The two standards behind agentic commerce
First, the Agentic Commerce Protocol, kept by OpenAI and Stripe. It powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, which began with United States Etsy sellers, and the specification sits in the open on agenticcommerce.dev. Second, the Universal Commerce Protocol, launched by Google and Shopify at NRF in January 2026 and expanded in May. UCP covers discovery, checkout and after-sales, with more than twenty partners including Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Adyen and Zalando. Native checkout runs in Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, in the United States first.
How big is this actually?
Smaller than the press releases suggest, for now. By mid-June 2026 there were around eight thousand verified UCP stores, and roughly ninety-nine per cent of them ran on Shopify. So this is a Shopify-and-United-States story at the moment. Nevertheless, the direction is unmistakable. Google already moved search toward answers rather than links, as we covered in Google AI Mode and the zero-click era, and assistants that browse were the obvious next step after agentic browsing.
What a Greek e-shop should do now
Nothing exotic, and nothing urgent. Fortunately the groundwork overlaps with work that already pays off:
- Fix the product feed. Accurate stock, price, VAT and delivery estimates matter more to an agent than to a human, because an agent cannot phone you.
- Mark up your products. Structured data is how any machine reads a price without guessing.
- Keep checkout boring. Guest checkout, clear shipping costs and no surprise fees survive automation better than clever funnels.
- Decide your position. An agent purchase means the customer never sees your brand, your upsells or your newsletter box.
That last item is a strategy question, not a technical one. Meanwhile the practical wins stay the same as ever: our notes on measuring what visitors do and the wider e-commerce archive cover the fundamentals.
The honest summary
Do not rebuild your shop for agentic commerce this year. Greek merchants are not in the first wave, and the standards are still moving. However, do read your product data as a machine would. If a stranger could not work out the final price and the delivery date from your page alone, an assistant cannot either. Fixing that helps human buyers today and positions you for the agents that follow.
